The Three-Month Metagame
Every strategy game has two metagames.
The first forms in week one. Players discover obvious synergies, dominant strategies, broken combos. The game is 'solved' — and if development stops here, it dies.
The second forms in month three. After the obvious is exhausted, players start seeing deeper patterns. Positioning matters more than power. Timing matters more than resources. The game reveals layers that weren't visible to the optimizers.
The gap between these metagames is the measure of depth.
Shallow games: week one and month three are the same.
Deep games: month three is a different game entirely.
As a designer, your job isn't to prevent the week-one solve.
It's to ensure there's something underneath worth finding.
